Personally, I'm having a harder and harder time finding the 2009-D coins... Seven years ago, I was finding them about once every 700 or so coins - now that number is closer to 1 in 1,000... in many areas of the country, it's been one every two boxes or worse, so I consider myself quite fortunate. Surprisingly, the 2009-Ps have actually been somewhat easier for me lately... I've gone from about 1 in 15K to more like 1 every 12K the past 100K or so searched, including two in the 6,000 I searched last week. CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Good luck, AllSeasons! As for me, I grabbed 2,400 nickels yesterday, all but 40 CWR... and, sadly, one of the groups (1,200 CWR) was someone's dump as there were no pre-60s, but there was a single 2009-D to salvage it from being a complete skunk... Thankfully, the other 1,200 coins were quite productive... I found two 2009-Ds and 9 pre-60s, including a 1936 Buffalo...   ... and a semi-key 1955 Philly!    The latter came up obverse first, but I knew right away it was a Philly even before I flipped it over just from the dark toning and weak strike which is typical of the vast majority of these coins. Thanks largely to the three in the two hoards I found, I'm already at FIVE 1955-P nickels for the year, the most I've EVER found in a calendar year. CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Well, my box turned out to be pretty much a skunk box. No War Nickels, Buffalos, 2009's, key dates, semi-keys, or album fillers. Total of thirteen 1950's, five 1940's, and one slick 1939-P. It was kind of a let-down. Now I gotta roll everything back up. Maybe I'll just take a break from CRH altogether ... |

Sorry your box was disappointing AllSeasons... that's just the way it goes sometimes... I bought two boxes from two different banks the first week in January and found 18 pre-60s TOTAL - the "best" coin, if you can call it that, was a 1947-S, along with just one 2009-D. Yeah, it was VERY disappointing.
The key is persistence... the very next group of nickels (1/2 a box) I bought, five days later, produced a 1950-D.

Rolls upon rolls--that's the nature of roll searching. I've been at it for decades upon decades. Stellar finds are few and far between. Still fun.

My guilty little secret to coin roll hunting any denomination (preferably cents and nickels) is to get a box of double crimped circulated rolls, pop all the rolls out to check the enders for cool finds, then put them back in the box and I begin my crh... I have a set amount of "trade" coins of the same denomination so when I have a findable coin, I pop it out of circulation and swap it out for one of my trade coins. I only open one end of the roll and work out the coins to search through on a table. Then I put the already searched coins from the roll back into it to trade out a searched box for another box of the same denomination.  By and far my best find ever yet was an 1939 DDR Jefferson nickel about XFish condition found last year. It was a coin that I was looking all over for, so of course I was tickled pink to find one roll hunting   Edited by mrwhatisit

Well, finished another skunk box yesterday and today. Just nine 1940's, thirteen 1950's, one 1939-P, and a Panamanian nickel. No War Nickels, Buffalos, 2009's, etc. Got another box today, so we'll see how that goes. Fingers crossed that my skunk streak will end this weekend. |

Great find on that 1939 DDR, mrwhatisit! I've never found one in all of my years of searching... and, AllSeasons, 23 pre-60s is not bad actually... hopefully your next box will produce more "quality" over "quantity"... As for me, I went through another 4,640 nickels (3,440 MWR, including a box, and 1200 CWR) on Thursday. It would've been more, but 5 of the LOOMIS rolls I got from one bank were all new 2022-Ds  . The other four LOOMIS rolls were much better though, producing a 1938-S! I also found a BU 1955 Philly  from another batch of 600 Brinks coins - likely connected to my hoard from last month. Incredibly, it's my sixth 1955 P nickel found on the year! As for the box, it only produced 16 pre-60s, but two of them were semi-keys (1942-D & 1951-S), and there were 3 2009-Ds too. I also found not one, but 2 2009-Ps amongst the 1200 CWR along with another semi-key 1951-S... No War Nickels nor Buffalos, but I'm not complaining!  Monday, I'll be turning the rejects in and getting more - will be hitting some neighboring cities in the hopes of running into more of those magical Brinks rolls. I finished hunting through my latest Loomis box from US Bank. My (silver) skunk streak has finally ended with a 1943-P War Nickel. No Buffalos or 2009's, however, but I'm not complaining. This is only my 4th War Nickel; what's interesting is all of them are from 1943. 3 of them are 1943-S, and the latest one is 1943-P, which is at least an album filler. It would've been really weird if I got four 1943-S's in a row! Still got 16 more holes to fill. I'm going to switch to pennies for a while, though, since I've got boxes upon boxes of nickels that I need to roll back up. Cheers!  Edited by AllSeasons
