AllSeasons Valued Member United States 397 Posts	Posted 03/05/2023 7:42 pm I went through 107 rolls of nickels this weekend. Found a War Nickel and a Buffalo nickel. I broke the curse of 1936-P Buffalos, and found a 1935-P, so now I have one 1934-P, one 1935-P, and three 1936-P's. But unfortunately, I'm repeating the same pattern for War Nickels. The 3rd War Nickel I found was also a 1943-S, same as the first two. What are the chances, you know? So my album remains at 17 unfilled slots. I'm starting to think this may be a little harder than I expected, especially @tnt said it took him/her 10,984 rolls, or 219+ boxes. Also, one of the less glamorous aspects of CRH is the process of rolling everything back up. I've got jars upon jars of nickels now that need to be rolled up. So I'm going to take a small break from nickels, until I can roll everything back up. In the meantime, I will go back to focusing on pennies instead. It was fun, though, finding Buffalos and War Nickels. Now that it's getting warmer outside, I'm also thinking of going back to metal detecting again, which would mean investing in a better metal detector, however. @CalzoneManiac My area doesn't seem to have the best nickel boxes. I'm lucky to get 15 finds per box; whereas RFT was regularly getting 20-25 finds per box in the DFW area. So it may take a little longer for me. Cheers! John77 Pillar of the Community United States 2942 Posts	Posted 03/10/2023 7:27 pm I haven't been on here for ages... so many things going on, but I've managed to keep on hunting coins and having some amazing luck so far in 2023 as I've already found 3 of the 5 key-date Jefferson nickels and ALL five of the semi-key dates (42-D, 49-S, 50, 51-S, 55) in multiple quantity. 11 days into 2023, I found the 1950-D amongst a group of 1,000 MWR: I've also stumbled upon two collector hoards - one of circulated coins comprised of 209 pre-60s including some better dates (1946-S, 1948-S, 1951-S, 1955, 1958)... On February 3rd, I got four customer wrapped rolls at one of my local banks amongst a group of 10 rolls total (other 6 were MWR)... they looked normal on the outside... ... but the contents were anything but! 120 pre-60 dated coins! I went back to that bank five days later, and found three more of those rolls... 89 more pre-60s! Onto hoard two... and it was even better than the first. Late the afternoon of February 17th, I purchased 25 rolls of nickels from another bank...10 of the rolls were Brinks MWR out of a group of a group of 25 my teller got from another teller's box. As soon as I started opening those 10 rolls, I knew I had something really special. Older BU coins dating from 1946 through 1974 (including a semi-key 1949-S and 1950) were showing up with great frequency along with circulated semi-key dates including 1942-D, 1951-S, and 1955, and even a proof 1964. Needless to say, I wanted to get back to that branch as quickly as I could, but they're closed on Saturdays and the following Monday was a federal holiday (MLK Day), so I had to wait until Tuesday, the 21st... thankfully, the other 15 rolls were still there and I got them all! This second batch was even better than the first, included were a really nice BU 1938-D , an AU 1938-S , another BU 1950, a BU 1951-S, and an Uncirculated 1955. In total, there were 69 pre-60 coins in the batch, 41 of which were Uncirculated! Needless to say, I'm hoping to find more of the coins from the above two hoards, as I'm sure there are more out there, particularly the bankwrapped ones, as it is obvious either a collection or dealer inventory got dumped into the big hopper where Brinks gets their coins. I've found them in both bank boxes and customer wrapped rolls. In a box I bought this past Christmas Eve, I found a 1911 V nickel, a 1920 Buffalo, a 1944-P War Nickel, 12 other pre-60s, and two 2009-Ds. My current box is middling, the only thing worth mentioning so far is an AU 1938-P. But my last box was above average: 1937 and 1937-D buffalos and two 1945-S War Nickels. AllSeasons, I've done about 85 boxes and found two V nickels, 1903 and 1906, both in MWR. If you go back far enough through this thread there are spreadsheets from several hunters, and I think one V nickel every 50 boxes is about typical. Report this Post to the Staff
