In a little bit of happy shock at the moment... I went to my favorite branch of my bank this morning, but my favorite teller wasn't in yet... I decided to get coin from another teller anyways.. turned out to be a great decision... I went to my car and started looking through them there... the 400 MWR produced the second rarest nickel I've EVER found in circulation, a 1915-S Buffalo!!! I did find a 1924-S Buffalo as part of a hoard dump a couple of years ago... but this coin is much more valuable than that one - $45- $50 depending. There were three pre-60 Jeffersons (1940, 1948, 1959-D) amongst the other coins along with a lone 2009-D which hardly shows any signs of circulation ... I went and got 320 CWR nickels from a different bank in the same shopping center but it was a complete skunk... I then went to my dump bank in the same shopping center and came back to my main branch with a fresh $50... my favorite teller was there this time so I got $20 in nickels (9 MWR, 1 CWR) from her... as usual, her coins were quite productive: 7 pre-60s including a 1945-P War Nickel and the scarce 1958 Philly!

As I promised the other day, a more comprehensive look at my nickel finds: As I've noted elsewhere, I've also found a single 1943P, 3 over 2 and a single 1939 Doubled Monticello and Five Cents. Additionally, my "dateless" Buffalo totals are low because I "pickle" every dateless one I find - about 85% of the time I successfully get a date. *Key to Jefferson nickel color codes: Grey (both shades) = 35% Silver War NickelsBlue = Key dates (< 7,000,000 minted) Green = Semi-key dates (< 10,000,000 minted) Yellow & Dark Grey = Scarce dates (< 16,000,000 minted) Orange = Tougher dates (< 20,000,000 minted) I didn't include my individual proof totals, but I will note that I've found proofs of every date from 1969 through 2003 save for 1978 and 1990. With 7 found, 1972-S leads the way. The earliest dated proof I've found is a 1954, the latest a 2012-S. I am going to also do one of these in the future just for my 2023 finds as well as one for my totals not including the hoards I've found through these past 7 1/2 years as they do skew the averages for both the semi-key date Jeffersons and Buffalos. Of note: 2009-Ds are getting harder and harder to find. My historic average pre-C0VID was almost 3 per box. This year, I am at just over 2 per box (160 found in 158,640 coins). Interestingly, 2009-Ps are showing up at a much better rate this year (19 found) with it taking barely 4 boxes to find one... prior to C0VID, it was about one per 7 boxes. This may be an anomaly though, as I found 11 of them in March (42,680 coins searched). You take that month out of there and my average (8 in 115,960 coins) for the other five months of 2023 is 1 per 14,495 coins (1 per just over 7 boxes) which is in line with my historic average.

Thanks, jbuck and tencentpenny... I love making these charts! If I can keep up my current pace, I should be at about 1.7 million nickels searched by the end of 2023... I'm hoping to hit 2 million by the end of 2024. I neglected to post my light searching results on Saturday before I did my totals - 1,240 coins searched produced 9 pre-60s including a 1944-P. This morning, I got 1,000 MWR from my "lucky" teller and sure enough I had good luck with her again - a 1937 Buffalo was amongst the 8 pre-60s and I also found a pair of 2009-Ds. That Buffalo is a milestone coin for me - the 400th one I've found CRH (yes, that's 10 full rolls!) I got 1,200 nickels combined from three other banks in the afternoon, but they only produced 6 pre-60s - one was the tough 1948-S... those rolls also produced 2 2009-Ds.
