Wow John77, you're on a roll! Awesome finds!

Thanks, Errers and Varietys! Yeah, it's hard to comprehend... random probability doesn't explain my luck with nickels this year - mostly through one teller and three separate hoards...

Quote:

When you say 1000 MWR, do you mean 1000 nickels ($50), or do you mean 1000 $2 rolls? Either way, that's a lot of nickels to go through every few days!

1000 machine wrapped rolled nickels, or 25 rolls, if you prefer, Brandmeister. I can get through them in about 45 minutes if I'm not interrupted.

Four War Nickels and a semi key date? Can't get mad at that.

Yeah... my finds with this one teller these past 4 1/2 months are simply crazy, CalzoneManiac. One War Nickel every 750 coins is crazygood! My first encounter with her was April 11th (her second day at the branch) - a 13 roll CWR hoard featuring 520 pre-1965 dated nickels, 280 of which were pre-1960s (including a 39-S, 5 49-Ss, 1 50, and 13 51-Ss)...

In the 15 weeks since (almost all MWR coins), I've found 5 V nickels, 9 Buffaloes, and 10 War Nickels in 27K or so coins I've bought from her.

Excellent finds, John!

Thanks, jbuck... and the beat goes on!

-----

Today, I bought another 1,000 MWR from her... only five pre-1960s, but one of them was a 1936 Buffalo! There was also a 2009-D in said group.

Sometimes you can't get any War Nickels in 2,000 coins.

More often than not, that's been the case for me in 2023... I got off to a really awful start with War Nickels this year, CalzoneManiac... about one every 3 1/2 boxes (7,000 coins) through March... need to do my July totals so I can see where I stand on the year now.

Congrats to everyone on their finds!

Unfortunately, I just have not had good luck with nickels lately. First, I've been having trouble getting nickels at all, whether it's Loomis rolls or customer rolls. Feels like everything just dried up in my area. The Loomis rolls I could get my hands on are yielding maybe 1 pre-1960 find every 5 rolls or so. It used to be every 2.5 rolls for me, so it's gotten a lot worse. It's been a long time since I've found a War Nickel, Buffalo nickel, or 2009 nickel. I've been focusing more on pennies in the last couple of months, but still keep on searching whatever nickel rolls I'm able to get my hands on. Hopefully it will improve at some point.

Cheers!

EDIT: As soon as I post this, I find two 2009-D's tonight. Murphy's Law, I guess!

Bought 1,320 nickels yesterday... 1,000 MWR nickels from my main branch and fav teller "only" brought me 6 pre-60s and a 2009-D...

320 nickels from another branch (240 CWR, 80 MWR) brought me 7 pre-60s and my first 1990-D NO FS found in over 2 years!
The-Goal:-25,000-Rolls-Of-Nickels-All-Searchers-Welcome!

I've now searched 1,588,320 nickels since this all began 7 1/2 years ago, and this is only the 22nd example of the 1990-D no FS I've found, putting it in the top 10 of the hardest-to-find (non-overdate/doubled die) Jeffersons for me:

1. 1939-D 3
2. 1950-D 5
3. 1938-D 10
4. 1943-D 11
5. 1938-S 14
6. 1939-S 18
7. 1942-P 21
8. 1944-D 22
8. 1990-D NO FS 22
10. 1955 "P" 23
10. 1945-D 23

John77, I had never heard of a 1990-D no FS nickel. Google showed your post on another foum, although I could not find an image of the missing FS. Perhaps you could humor me and post a pic here?

Edit: I reloaded the page, and there it was. So basically die polishing or something removed the tiny FS that was under Jefferson's bust. I wonder if that's why they eventually moved it to the reverse on the edge of Monticello.

Did my usual $20 of nickels today. Got a 1942-P War Nickel and a 2009-P, my first 2009 nickel. Also a gleaming 1962 nickel that looked like it had never been circulated (although the DD under magnification is epic). Finally, a few beautiful gleaming 2022 and 2023 to tuck into rolls for future generations.

For pre-1970, there was only a 1947, 1956, 1958 and then 16 1960s (about half '64). It seems like lately the mix of 1938-1969 has been going steadily down, while the mix of 1990s is going way up. These are all MWR, so I assume it's pulled from a large pool of coins.

Haven't gone through them with a magnifier yet, that's always my favorite part. =)
