So basically die polishing or something removed the tiny FS that was under Jefferson's bust. I wonder if that's why they eventually moved it to the reverse on the edge of Monticello.
It's the exact same type of error as the much more hyped and talked about 1971-D and 1972-D NO FG Kennedy halves which are also the result of overpolishing of the reverse dies - the '72-D is controversial to the point where one camp says the initials were never on the reverse die to begin with, while the traditionalists claim it was overpolishing of said die. The error on the nickel itself is every bit as spectacular as on the halves - no trace of the FS shows under even the highest magnification on any of my 1990-D NO FS nickels - I have several that are full BU that I plucked out of circulation the year of release (the only other time in my life where I was actively a CRH - a very short run). The obverse design of the Jefferson nickel was permanently changed in 2006 so Schlag's initials were moved to the reverse since it was (and still is) his original 1938 reverse design in use. 2004 was the last year they used his original obverse design, and, hence the last year FS appeared on the obverse. In 2005 neither the obverse nor the reverse (both the American Bison and Ocean in View) were Schlag's.

... and the beat goes on... 1,000 MWR nickels bought from my lucky teller yesterday after work gave me 9 pre-60s including yet another Buffalo - this time a 1936-S. This is my 10th Buffalo from said teller this year (since April 11th) in just 30,640 nickels searched (almost all MWR)... I've found 18 other Buffalo nickels this year (in 147,760 coins searched)... So, on average, it's taken me just over a box and a half (1 in every 3,064 coins) of nickels to find one in her coins to this point, and a little over four boxes (1 every 8,208 coins) to find one with the rest of the tellers combined.

Wow, for 87 years of circulation, that coin is in excellent shape!

Nice to see a Buffalo nickel with a mintmark even though it is a common date.

I bought a box yesterday and went through it last night. WHAT A HUNT! 5 2009 D, a 2009 S proof, 3 1945 S, a 1963 proof, and 31 pre-1960 non-silver. We had a close call with an obverse-facing 1950 but no MM. Drat! However we did manage our third V nickel of the year! A really slick 1904.

What does a 1963 proof look like after years of circulation?

It would have a sharp strike and may have some of the proof luster left. Keep in mind, you don't know if the coin was dumped in 1963 or last week.

I'll snap a few photos. In the last few weeks we've also plucked two 1962 proofs and a 1968 S proof (not a business strike for sure).

Searched 20 rolls of nickels yesterday. Found 25 pre-1960 nickels. Earliest 1939 P. Not bad... lots of fun.

GREAT box, pound_foolish! 34 pre-60s including 3 Wars, a V nickel, a semi-key 1950, two proofs, and SIX 2009-dated coins are crazygood numbers! Might want to go back to that bank and see if they have a "sister" box... Quote:

That's a find rate of 62.5 pre-60s in a box... you might want to go back and get more because that find rate is 3-4x most people's typical average, jk109e4!

My thoughts also John77. This is a smaller bank I use and I only tap them every once and a while. But, I might have to make an exception as I got 60 wheaties in 20 rolls total (mostly in 3 customer wrapped rolls). Also, phenomenal rate, indicating dump.

Bought 5,200 nickels total from 5 different banks yesterday... only found 31 pre-60s, but included were 1928-D and 1936 Buffalo nickels, along with a 1942-P, and better date 1948-S and 1958 coins. Also found a 2009-P and 5 2009-Ds.
