Right now I keep everything pre-1960, though I'm gonna start tossing back 1958-D and 1959-D that aren't BU.I've also started rolls of BU 1982 and 1983 (as suggested by many on this thread) since there were no mint sets those years. I think I'm going to stop keeping 59, 58, 57, and 56. I've got so many of them and in circulated condition it's going to take decades before they are worth anything.

Gothic - roll them and put them on ebay - you'll probably get double face value. |

Went to see the coin dealer yesterday and did confirm that my 43-P is a partially rotated die and said that said that it will not be higher than the melt value of the silver. However he was impressed with my 62 FS and not impressed with 64 the partial steps (2 to 3). Any who. Some questions for you seasoned folks. Is there a safe way to remove the blackish residue from the War Nickels (mainly) and others? Anyone notice that on ebay some of the hard to find 1939 and beyond are going rather cheaply? Am I missing something here? Where's a good source to find pics of the error's (mainly 43/42 P, 39 varieties, 49 d/s, 55 d/s) on WORN / XF grade coins? OR is this a futile effort? I did wash 2 of the wars with dish detergent and hot water. Seems like a lot of work to me and not sure what you folks think of it. I only save 54 and earlier coins...and I will get rid of the p & d mints of 51-54 after I confirm they are not henning nickels. Ceylon: There is really not much in the way of high value jeffersons exc the error coins, like the 43/2-p, 39 doubled monticello, etc, so if you are trying to make $$ roll searching they would not be much of a help, most likely. I search the halfs to try and make $$ and the nickels because I like them......and I noticed a long time ago that the whole thing is much more fun when you are not worried about making money. A good way to trying to make $$ is to look for the varieties that seem to be going for big bucks on ebay and go to shows and try to cherrypick them. Seems tedious sometimes but you will become an expert on certain coins in no time flat. |

Agreed - my silver take in halves pays for the nickel and penny roll searching, plus my buying of other coins. I've sold over $400 in silver from halves this year so far......less than 1/3 of what I've found.

The silver, buffalos, and semikeys provide some revenue. Errors like Cuds are generally the only thing I've found regularly that are worth more than a buck or two, but like the others I search nickels mostly for fun and not for any real profit motive. -XoG |

XoG - I agree with you on searching nickels for fun. I basically hoard the keepers for now and haven't based my decisions on making a profit off of the finds yet. I picked up a box on thursday and here are the highlights: 2 War Nickels - 43 P and 45 P 2 1930's - 1 '38, 1 '39 13 mixed 1940's 24 mixed 1950's 5 1968-1970 S mints |

Thanks for input folks. What are Cuds? TIA I sometimes am thinking the nickels are underrated just like the clad Kennedy halves. Any who, I have been seriously thinking about, buying (down the road) and putting together a collection of the various nickel error and hard to find varieties as the prices seem out of whack. That's why I was inquiring about the pricing. Peace |

I got a box yesterday and just took a quick peek at a few rolls last night and found ... a 1907 V nickel!  I thought it was only a myth that V nickels could be found. Well, I didn't really think it was a myth because I've read comments from others who have found them. But I thought that the chances that I would find one were pretty small.' But the most amazing thing is that it has a full LIBERTY! All is right with the world. My faith in roll searching has been renewed. JDH |

I just finished another box of nickels. In addition to the 39-D that I mentioned in my last posting, I found a 1927 buffalo. Overall, I found 28 pre 1960's.

I've never pulled a V nickel from a box, but I did get one in change from a Target store last year. |

Just finished two boxes: 50 pre 1960 - no keys or semi-keys but I did get 1 War Nickel. In addition I found: 1936S Buffalo 2 dateless Buffalos 4 Canadian nickels 1 Cayman islands 10 cent I'm down to 22 holes, but I think I've found all the low hanging fruit, so it'll be awhile before I complete the set. |

Did a box and a half of Brinks wrapped yesterday and got 1 dateless buffalo,2 wars (one is a 44s which filled a hole so I only need a 43D and 38S to complete my set from circulation)a 53S in AU/MS condition,a 41 in AU,a 39 in AU and a bunch of common pre-60's. I am seeing less but better stuff it seems lately.
