I was looking closer on one of my Shield nickels and noticed this. I know the dies for the Shield nickels were terrible. Do you think this is actual doubling or just a bad strike? I was going to submit it anyway for grading because of its nice grade, but didn't know if there was any attributions for it.

I see the tell-tale sign of a shelf-like appearance: indicative of MD.

I found this to be 'extremely' enlightening and accurate:

MD but good eye. If these are of interest to you, you will have LOADS of fun in the Shield nickel series. It's like every coin was a unique strike!

! I'm not even sure it's MD more like a worn out die if we are talking about the letters in the legend, I don't see doubling on the annulet or shield/leaves. There is a great website dedicated to Shield nickle varieties, if you are so inclined to begin a collection of them, lots and lots of different and wild varieties abound in this series.

Also look for the out of print book on them by Ed Fletcher, it's excellent.

Longacre doubling not MD. Notice it is on one side of some letters, the other side on others and on both sides of some of them. You see Longacre doubling very frequently on the motto on Shield nickels.
