Here's another nice coin I recently purchased, an 1857 Flying Eagle cent.

It appears to be original and uncleaned. There is still a bit of mint red in the obverse lettering and around the wreath on the reverse. (The red is hard to capture.)

There does not appear to be any obvious wear to the eagle's feathers, but there is a spot on the breast where the patina is a bit brighter copper color. I'm not sure if this is indicative of a slight bit of rub or just a spot of lighter color.

The tip of the tail is a bit weakly struck as is the corresponding area on the wreath on the reverse.

What do folks think? Is this a sharp AU or does it have a shot at MS?

Thanks for sharing your opinions.

Even with the hit on the 5, that is one great FE cent. AU-58 in my book.

Pretty coin indeed. I'm at a mid-AU because of the ding in the 5 and the prevalence of misc marks in the fields.

There shouldn't be any red on this coin. It wasn't made of pure copper or bronze.

Other than that, I like it!

Perhaps original mint luster is a better term.

Has to be in the AU55-58 range, unfortunately.

There is a tiny amount, but obvious, wear on the high points of the leaves and eagle's feathers in various places. Average number of small dings in the fields consistent for AU55-58 range.

The '5' hurts a bit, but that would add to a 'details' comment.

I notice that it is struck a bit off center.

It's a really nice coin anyway, much better than mine.

Aside from that nasty looking 5, slight verdigris, and little reverse rim issues from 2 to 8:oo. I'll give it AU-53 .

I have some weird fascination for the FEs. I have looked at many of these coins over the last month or so an acquired a 57. Mine was a much lower grade. This one is a beauty, congrats.
