I came across this uncirculated electrotype 1841 Half Cent on ebay. The photos are good and you can see the details quite well when zoomed in (The zoomed photos on ebay are better than my screenshots below). I realize this probably violates the ebay selling rules, though is an interesting historic specimen and I know that these are collectable. It would be interesting to know how old it is. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1841-Half-C...AOSwWnFWCb-l

Not only does it violates ebay's selling terms, its ILLEGAL. it MUST have the word "COPY" on the coin in order to be sold (under the Hobby Protection Act of 1973). Sent a message to the seller...

Putting "copy" on a 19th Century electrotype is a ludicrous idea. This coin deserves a good home and the seller seems very legit. Probably get censored for saying it, however, the recent trend making this site the " ebay" police is rather off putting to me. This is supposed to be a place where education is the goal. Not some vigilante site that "I know what you should collect, therefore I am not going to allow you to collect what I think is wrong." is the rule. I do like the idea of getting Numismatic Forgeries taken down. But, we need to leave the legit, cont. counterfeits, electrotypes etc. alone.. Brief article on Electrotypes.... http://www.anacs.com/contentPages/S...e.aspx?ID=19

if the seller is obviously stating that its a fake, I have no problem with it. it may be against policy etc, but I feel that these types of collectable counterfeits should stay as long as they're correctly stated as a fake

Amida,
In this case, I agree with you. I did not post the above with the intent of reporting it for a take down. Nevertheless, I do realize that each of does have the right to report it though. I was looking at as an educational opportunity to see an old contemporary counterfeit in uncirculated condition and having pretty good photos.

I agree it I quite interesting; for reference, Swamperbob recently made an informative thread discussing the distinction between contemporary counterfeits and numismatic forgeries: https://goccf.com/t/247823&whichpage=1Here, it is great we can discuss both interesting counterfeits like this, and forgeries on the ebay reporting forum. In my opinion both contribute to the educational value of CCF, with regards to a numismatic field and education regarding what to avoid. So how do you tell an electrotype from the real deal? Is it the small bubbling of the surface?

I, like many others here, am not opposed to the sale of electrotypes or contemporary forgeries. The only things I believe should not be traded are unmarked modern counterfeits intended to deceive, unless purchased for educational purposes.

This is an acceptable, period counterfeit.

Amida, I cannot agree with you more. " ebay police" is a much better title for this site. Beyond that, I will keep my opinions to myself because most of you will not like what I have to say.

Yeah, the fact that is seems like almost every other thread these days is "OMG look at this fake coin on ebay" is really turning me off of this site more and more. Like I get it, it's a service, but it really needs it's own sub-forum at this point. There are enough topics started to support it.

There is a sub-forum for reporting fakes on ebay, here is the link: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...FORUM_ID=160What Bobby does is report the fake after he is certain, then after it is taken down the topic is locked and moved to the correct forum for the coin being discussed with images so people can study the fakes from the images to get a better idea of what to look out for. If it were just about reporting fakes, then the threads would be deleted after they were taken down, but they are saved with images so people like me who aren't always sure what to look for can study and learn how to distinguish the forgeries from the real deal.

Finally! Looks like that subforum was just created a few days ago. Hopefully this means the end of these threads in the general forums.

Contemporary counterfits are just fine. Major auction houses sell them regularly and without hesitation. I have one, a colonial, and its awesome. A ton of history in a little package.

Contemporary Electrotypes are a popular collecting field on their own right. They have been collected for a long time. These should in no way be confused with modern fakes and counterfeits made with the sole purpose of deception. I see no issue with this listing as the coin is clearly described.

The Hobby Protection Act only applies to items made AFTER it's passage. His price is too high though, $200 would be closer. I like these electrotypes, I have three of the Proof Only issue electrotypes myself, and I'd like to eventually get the whole date run.
