Never had a Seated Liberty dollar before, so I'm a bit clueless. Looking for a budget coin to fill a hole in my 7070 type album. Please help me grade and price this silver dollar.

VF30 with probably an old cleaning but I think that it would still grade
between $400 and $500 would be my guess

Seems solid for VF-30 and could go a notch higher. Surfaces look acceptable with no serious marks or harsh cleaning. Recent sales of this date at Heritage range mostly from $400-460, for certified VF-30 coins. This piece looks authentic but I would only buy it if the seller agreed to take it back if it could not be successfully certified.
If I were buying it for my 7070 I would send it to ANACS for authentication. I would then crack it out for the album and save the holder label as evidence it is a genuine piece.

Dealer says VF too. I was worried because the word "liberty" on the shield is supposed to be mostly sharp for VF. I guess the key word is "mostly". I found a website called thecoinspot that has photos of all the different grades. According to their photos, this coin could be VF25 or VF30.

Thanks to all that responded. According to the NumisMedia, fair market value for a 1842 Seated Liberty dollar in VF20 condition is $480. One post in this thread said it was worth $400 to $500 and another said $400 to $460. I pulled the trigger and bought the coin for $360. Feels like I got a pretty decent deal.

Congrats, that does sound like a very good price. I would still send it to ANACS. It should cost you around $40 total and would provide assurance your coin is the real thing. There are many counterfeits of every Seated dollar date, some of them very deceptive.

VF-30 details - I think the fields were probably cleaned at some point.

I say probably cleaned based primarily on the areas beneath the eagle's wings, which are as clear as the open fields - not a likely occurrence.
