Hi there, I was cataloging some recent purchases and notices the 2 looked off, are there any errors for 1902 or is this nothing at all. Thx *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Can you get a zoom of the 2/error? Would probably help these folks out.

I wish I could, I have a celestron USB that I took the picture with and then opened in paint to zoom in. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

See if the focal length of the microscope will allow you to move it closer to the coin.

Okay, I took the celestron out of the cradle and held it on the coin, then cropped out the 2 and zoomed in. The lighting is bad, I tried a toothpick lightly on the small circle area, there is something there but I don't know what, also 2 near holes on the zoomed out view you can see one in front of the face. Any idea what that is also?

The holes are PMD. As for the 2, it almost looks like an overdate but I'm hesitant to call it that. A quick search turns up no results for that date.

Need to get the crud off to see of there is a RPD. No known overdates for 1902.

Thanks for the feedback.
1) Should I try to clean the crud off and if so how?
2) Is there someone who can look at it and say for sure what is under there? Maybe they have better optics than I do.

I dont think this is an overdate. There is only one overdate known for the series (1888/7). There is a possibility of a repunched date, but they are all pretty minor for the most part and dont add much value for the date. If you are intent on sending it to someone to look at, send to Rick Snow, who charges a few bucks. He wrote the books on Indian Head cent varieties.

I would appreciate it.
Thanks

If you want my honest opinion, its not going to be worth it. What you should do is spend the same amount of money and get a digital USB microscope on ebay. You will be able to see much closer and post better pics. I personally dont see anything that would even indicate a repunched date. The coin is well circulated and damaged with the large scratch across the face. If you really want to send it to him, here is his website. www.indiancent.com Dont be shocked if you dont even get a response if you send him those pictures. When I first started collecting Indian Head cents 5 years ago, I sent him pictures of what I thought was an error and he did not respond. Turns out what I had was nothing more than Machine Doubling.

Spend your money on something useful. An $80 USB microscope was one of the best purchases I've made in the last year.

I have a Celestron 10X150 currently; any recommendations?
