I google searched images of Utah Quarters to see what they are supposed to look like and saw a bunch of examples so I see what you mean by the missing hubcap. But one of the pictures that came back was very pixelated but looks like it might be similar. When I zoomed in the quality went way down so I couldn't tell and when I clicked on the link the picture was no longer there. There may be more out there...

I also agree that it would be strange if it were grease because it is only in that one small spot and everything else around it looks normal.

I have three Utah quarters, two from mint sets and one clad proof. All of them have the hub on the wheel in question. I guess I will pay more attention to this. I'm wondering if this is just some random error or an undiscovered variety.

I do have three rolls of random quarters. I will check them tonight and see if I have any Utah quarters there.
Rest in Peace

I checked my other quarters, they are just some random pocket change that I happen to have. I had one Utah quarter and it had the hub in the wheel in question. I will keep looking though.

Hey, just came across my first Utah quarter But, unfortunately it has the little hubcap inside the wheel. I was hoping it didn't.

Did you ever find any more like it?

It could just be a minor amount of grease preventing the formation of that design on that area on the die.

not only is the journal missing, the entire cylinder seems to have disappeared...in fact, if you compare the two engines, the one on the right is pretty hosed.....
