This weekend turned out to be very coin friendly to me. Saturday there was a small coin auction and Sunday there was a coin show with a small auction after. I saw some decent items, but nothing really jumped out as a must have for me. I did buy a bunch of proof and mint sets cheap to break apart and and the dime to my new dansco Roosevelt album. I won a 1971 RNC box with a 1972 ike in it for a buck. I was just joking when I bid and ended up wining the thing. I also picked up a couple of decent 2 cent pieces and a nicer SLQ to upgrade the one in my 7070. The funny thing was I had the XRF scanner with me at the first auction because they had some Chinese gold bullion and I was going to be sure of what it was before I bid. The gold all turned out real, but the auctioneer asked me to check a 1928 Peace dollar someone had returned saying it was fake. There was another dealer that I knew there and he was looking it over trying to see if he could determine if it was legit. The piece weighed dead on, right diameter, and it looked very good The 8 looked a little off, but other than that it looked good. We hit it with the scanner and it was 90% copper. A truly scary counterfeit as it would have fooled the majority of the people looking at it. The dealer was setting up at the show Sunday and he asked if I would bring the scanner with me. I took it in and after getting an evil eye and followed by the off duty police officer I went over to his table and set it up. He had a few questionable pieces that turned out to be good, but the other dealers saw what I had and son there was a line of people wanting me to check their items. I figured there would be a few fraudulent items, but almost every person who came over had something that was fake, and they were good fakes. The head of the show asked me to come to the next show and set up a table and scan items all day. There were also a couple of local coin clubs (which I didn't know existed) that asked me if I could come to their meetings and scan items for them. It looks like my toy could start paying for itself soon, which is good news cause that's more coin money in my pocket.

Nice but don't give away your services. Don't make people feel like it's theirs. Set up a fee schedule and stick to it otherwise your expensive toy will cause you to be walked all over. Great to see you're finding a niche to start having it pay for itself though

Excellent!
Have you figured out what to charge? I'm not sure what I'd be willing to pay ...but then I have a pretty low-end collection I think.
It's a shame that there are so many fakes out there but I'm glad that you're using your new and expensive tool for the good of the hobby.
Does it work through slabs?

As already said, don't make this a free thing. At least charge something for your services.

Yeah, I'm sure people would easily be willing to pay a few bucks for a scan. Oh, and btw, I bought one of those x-ray vision glasses when I was a kid. I miss the junk for sale in the back of comics.

Pricing is the one issue I'm working on. While I don't want to take advantage of people it was a significant purchase. To just pull the trigger and look at the screen, who want's to spend a lot of money for that? I could take the laptop and printer and give them a printout which has more cost involved so the price should be higher. I have until the 12th to figure this all out though, so I plan on trying to find other people who offer the service and be comparable.
Buddy yes it will scan through a slab with no problem.
