I've gotten a few half dollars from the bank in the past, but never in bulk. I was wondering how hard it would be to complete a collection strictly through CRH (both mints, circulation strikes only). Would I likely be able to do that within a dozen or so rolls? What about if I wanted coins all the way to 2015?

I'm sure this would be a fun project. I just wanted to know what to expect before I started. Thanks for the help!

@vince220

It is indeed possible, though probably not within a few dozen rolls (the full circulating set is 60 coins, since in 1987 the halves were not for circulation). It took me two boxes of halves (i.e. 200 rolls, a total of 4,000 coins) plus about two dozen rolls not in boxes to complete the circulating set, and it was fun. I do remember my last two empty spaces (1989D and 1999D) were filled toward the end of the second box, so there was some suspense.

I don't do boxes every often because I don't have time to do this full-time, and disposing of the unwanted halves is not easy unless you've lined up different banks that will take them. I was able to get most of the set in BU or near-BU condition, but some of them are not that great in terms of condition, so I am continuing to try to upgrade those.

An added bonus is the (very occasional, at least for me) silver piece, as well as some of the proofs and not intended for circulation dates, which I keep. Some of the more full-time coin roll hunters may well have put together a complete set of Kennedys including silver and proofs and NIFCs, but would require a lot more time and effort. Take a look at the half dollars CRH thread, which reports some spectacular finds from time to time.

To correct my post just now, each box is 50 rolls, so the two boxes were 100 rolls, i.e. 2,000 coins, which was what it took to complete my circulating set. The additional separate rolls not in boxes that I searched did not have any circulating clad examples that were not already available from the boxes - though they did have a lot of silver Kennedys and a few older halves including a Barber. So slightly less daunting than my original post may have suggested.

It took me 2 boxes to complete the circulation set as well. Everyone seems to have their own tough coin from the series--mine was 1979-D and 1986-P. 1999-P is the "key" of the circulation issues, and is the only one with a mintage of less than 10 million. I think I found 12 between the two boxes. Both boxes were each roughly 1/4 BU 1995-P, indicating that a casino had probably recently retired its half dollar slot machines and dumped its inventory at the bank. You never really know what you are going to get in a box of half dollars.

Starting in 2002, the Kennedy halves were no longer minted for general circulation. While some of these NIFC coins do find their way into circulation, I would think it would be tough to find the later dates unless you searched a whole lot of rolls. Probably way more than a dozen rolls as you asked in your first post.

Yes, those searching by the box have had good luck with the NIFC finds. I think it is necessary to search in bulk.

This truly is a monster thread, but may well be worth the time just to see who is finding what...
