I'm interested in opinions on this 1838 Seated Liberty half dime.

It's not a coin I own, but one I am considering buying. The seller calls it "Gem MS". It's not that, but it looks very nice to me.

The photographs are the seller's.

Thank you for your opinions.

I'd be at AU-58 on this one. Look at the marks in the right obverse field, the slight wear on high points, legs, arms, chest, face and tip of liberty cap. The photo actually looks like a scan so not very clear.

Any time 170+ year old silver is blast white, I question it. Looks dipped to me. That being said, it has sharp detail. Hard to tell a grade on this one. Beautiful coin, I just don't think it is original.

Heavy doubling on both sides? Looks like a worst case "slider" that a TPG would probably slab low MS. A tough one to put a value on.

How reliable is the seller? I am by no means an expert but I'm not highly confident its authentic. Looking at PCGS photograde, the shield, top of dress and hair all look odd to me.

Looks doubled, especially on Liberty's nose.

Thanks for all the responses. I think I'll pass on it. Seller was asking $300.00.

its certainly not whizzed. I would say its a slider that is has been very well kept and would grade AU58 at it worst and probably even have a shot at MS61. Look at the doubling on S1 as well.
