Is the doubling on the mintmark caused by circulation? I know the "doubling" on the date is MD or a worn die, but the mint mark looks the same.

Flat shelf like facing towards the rim. Bust shows same as well. MD would be prime suspect. Rookies thoughts. Thanks, Doug.

Thanks for the response. I was a little confused about the minting process. I realize now it was a dumb question.

11997755, Beware it is possible to have MD on a variety as well. Be it DD (Doubled Die) or a RPM.

So I say good eye and question. Circulation (flattening) has taken a toll on this one as well so all I see is the MD in the current pics. Thanks, Doug.

When looking at coins you need to take in everything you are seeing. When you see that the doubling on the mint mark is roughly the same as the doubling on the numbers in appearance, and you already know that the doubling you see on the numbers is MD, it would be logical to assume so is the mint mark. You are beginning to understand the difference. I think the best thing you can do is look at a lot of photos of RPMs and doubled dies like you find on Copper Coins. Look at the characteristics, and study them. Once you become more familiar, coins like this will start to be a no brainer. There is A LOT to learn. It will not happen over night. Try not to rush yourself.

Thank You Seal006 for the mentoring. I found a few more RPM's last night (they were obvious ones). It took me a long time to even think about searching for RPM's. What's nice about them. There neighbors with the BIE's. Thanks again to all for the responses and understanding of a beginners questions.

I am happy to answer any questions you may have. I was lucky and got most of my education from the pros themselves.
