I have this 1989P Jefferson nickel with some odd bulging around the mint mark. I can see that the die is in a late state and that there is a lot of flow on the surface of the coin. I am not sure if this has anything to do with it and if the bulging is the result of a deteriorating die. The mint mark is filled in and I am not sure if it took a shot, and if that would have resulted in the bulging. I tried to get some good pictures so that perhaps someone might help me to understand what I am seeing.

Hi John D,

Interesting anomaly. I was thinking a clash, but nothing appears to fit that scenario. Gouge, but rather large and less irregular.

Decent pictures, but when taking shots of nickels/dimes/etc, you may want a dark backdrop. Also, you can reduce the glare by using a diffuser/covering LEDs to allow more of the coin to appear.
Rest in Peace

I think the die flow marks indicate a late die state so it's likely that the die was damaged from normal use.

The die is in the VLDS when your coin was struck. Note the die flow in the fields and the wave over the mint mark. Just extreme die wear. If this was part of the design, then the die flow lines would not break it up. Just die wear shows these flow lines like on your coin.
