Dan Holmes numismatist, scholar, family man has passed away today. He was a collector of early American large cents. His collection was in one of the most complete ever formed in Sheldon varieties. Dan was aflicted with ALS, and he sold his amazing collection through Goldberg's Auctions in four parts. The catalogs are reference works in their own right, and have become quite collectible as well.
R.I.P. Dan - I hope to one day have one of his coins in my collection, a first rate pedigree indeed. "Buy the Book Before You Buy the Coin" - Aaron R. Feldman - "And read it" - Me 2013! Very sorry to hear the news. I was not able to acquire something from his auctions but I did receive a special gift from a mutual friend. An aluminum foil pressing of his 1857 N-3 coin. It came with the 2x2 card noting that it is a personal pressing of Daniel W. Holmes, Jr. The coin can be viewed in color on Page 373 of the Goldberg Catalog "The Dan Holmes Collection of Late Date Large Cents Part IV" It holds a special place in my collection. RIP Dan

Sorry to hear about Dan.
I'm luck enough to have a piece from his early date collection and I think it is a very special piece. When he ot down to the last ten coins he needed to have the complete early date set by variety and all the NC's he put out word to the copper dealers for those last ten. The very last piece he acquired to finish the set was a 1798 S-158. Today that coin is in my collection.

I bid on it in the sale of his collection. Bid five times catalog price and missed it. Then a year later it came back on the market and I snagged it for six times catalog price.
