I got a colour brochure in the mail saying International Auction (internationalauction.ca) was coming to my province and city next week for five days and you can sell them gold and silver coins and jewellery. Also collectible cards and toys. Have any of you dealt with them? I have nothing I want to sell but was curious. For fun I'd like to stop by. However they are open 9 to 5 and I work so might not get there.

If I'm not mistaken, that is one of the pseudo take-offs imitating Antiques Roadshow where they fleece old folks out of their treasures and give you 2X face for scrap silver. Glue your wallet to your pocket and try to keep a straight face if you go.

They were back in my city this week at a place five minutes from where I live. So I thought that for fun I'd go in. I had an extra 1965 and 1966 Canadian silver dollar, probably mint MS62 so nothing too valuable from a collectors point of view. I figured at silver's price today (Sep. 29, 2016) there is about $15.20 Canadian of silver value per dollar.
They offered me $10. Right afterwards I contacted what I believe to be the most popular buyer and seller of bullion and coin in town and they said they would pay $13 and change. That is more in line with what I expected International Auction to offer.
I actually sold some 1965 and 1966 silver dollars three weeks ago at a coin show in town and got $14.50 per coin and I know silver was about the same spot price three weeks ago as today. Most places won't pay $14.50 at the moment but $10 is pretty low.

These people are sick....literally. I went into their fly by night hotel conference room setup a couple months back when they werw in town with some scrap 80% silver just to see. After realizing that I knew what silver was worth, they upped there offer to 13x face.
I did this because I knew that if I had know nothing they would have hosed me...just like they did to the elderly woman who walked in judt after me. I spoke to her afterwards, clearly no clue what $40FV of Canadian 80% silver was worth. When she told me they gave her 100 dollars I was rattled to the core.
I spent the rest of the day on the hotel premise warning each person prior to going in, and managed to snip a few 1000 worth from those crooks. Putting 100s of extra dollars in the elderlys pockets that is surely for grocerys and bills somewhat made me feel better, but my guts still turned. I paid 80% of melt btw.

I've always wondered if these travelling rip-off shows are the source of the well known, high volume, poor-photo ebay.ca coin auction seller, can't remember the full name at the moment but it starts with "a".

Updated information .. I stopped by when they were in town and was offered $10.00 for a coin I brought along to sell. I declined as the scrap value was much higher. The same day I called a local store and they offered me $17.90 sight unseen. Wouldn't trust these guys. Far better to look elsewhere!

and prey on the elderly and inexperienced. what bugs me the most is this (had long discussions with the RCMP about it a few years ago): they are operating "on the swords edge" of the legal side. they will make you an offer and if you even say as close to YES or similar, they and you have a deal! it is called a verbal contract and can be legally binding and can sometimes be enforced. Seller be-ware!My last experience (purposely) with them, just about 3 weeks ago here on Vancouver Island: they offered me $ 425 for a full whitman $ book , incl 1948, 47 and 45... full. Of course, I played dumb, said I found it in GM attic. guy told me it would be well paid at about 325 but since some of the dollars are in nice shape he can pay me more. I called them crooks and cheats loudly. what really bugs me to no end: the towns and cities across the country give them business licenses!! and local hotels and restaurants happily accommodate these crooks to rip-off local citizens!! so ask yourself WHO, which ebay sellers, are selling their proceeds of their buying trips? suprise, surprise!!

I've heard of them before. I occasionally see their flyers in my mailbox, advertising they will be in town for a few days, usually at some hotel in one of their conference rooms. These flyers always say they are looking to buy your old coins, jewelry, gold, collectibles, luxury watches, 'valuable objects' etc, even going so far as to list some of the prices they will loosely pay.
The most recent time for this with me was back in March, and I recall seeing that they were wanting to buy 1967 Canadian $20 gold coins (from the Centennial set), and listed their buy price as $100! Obviously the melt value of this coin is way higher than that. I thought, who is dumb enough to fall for this nonsense?...especially considering one can Google enough information about what this place is wanting to buy to figure out they are trying to scam you.

I think the next time they roll thru town, I may just plop my butt down in a lawn chair in front of the door and inform all the sellers of their shadiness as they enter. My sign could read...."Not buying......Free honest opinions...Don't get ripped off"... It would be a chance to see some nice coins and make some new friends.

I've seen their flyers but have never paid a visit. On ebay they have gone by various names over the years. They start everything at $0.99 USD with no close-up pictures of the items. I've bought from them multiple times as you can get some good deals. They have some really nice items sometimes (1948 dollars, 1935 series banknotes, etc.). All the more reason that anyone that has coins of at least some value needs to provide clear instructions to their next of kin on what to do with their collection.
