Would you return it or keep it? This was in an actual sealed proof set before my local coin store broke some apart to sell as singles.

I think that I would most definitely return it. Of course, I do not collect errors, and am not sure that it would be classified as one.

Coop - I was there when they were being broken apart and it was that way before it was unsealed.

Maybe something happened before it was sealed then. The line goes over the letter and looks incuse from the image I see. It appears to be a cut. It can't be a die crack as die cracks are not straight. It can't be gouge on the die and a gouge would be raised from the surface. So the only thing I can figure, it damaged.

IMHO, If I had seen that BEFORE breaking it outr, I would have left it intact, and gotten a replacement, but, It is nothing more than a 4-bit piece, or maybe worth melt.
The only time I ever "broke open" a proof set was to remove a dime with an obvious struck-thru. I was very new to collecting, and , frankly, would not do it now.

I got the 2007 proof sets and they came all dinged up, had alot of minor scratches on them, and look like some type of deposits on them, I don't think they quality controlled them very well. I sent them back and got another, the new set was a little better, but not much.

Looks like a '77 S, copper-nickel clad piece. No melt value as suggested above. The problem is tat the way it is now, a person cant tell if it was damaged at the Mint or damaged by a staple from a 2X2 sometime later.

I would return it of possible.

But did anyone see the good in the first image? Most just see the scratch. Did anyone note the light fading on the face? It would be a great avatar. Take a look again at the image on the top of the thread.
