I know this is just an anomaly in the planchet metal that doesn't increase the value but I think they're pretty cool. I've actually seen half/large cents looking like wood. But this one has a lot more detail.

I have a bunch like that. I always thought it was just a severe cleaning that did it.

Indeed this is an alloy mix issue. Has nothing to do with cleaning.

There are collectors that specifically look for coins like this. Alloy issues were a problem. The collectors of these actually have a name for these. Wood grain cents. This is a nice one.

I've seen them on cents dated up to about 1921. I don't recall seeing any dated after that but they probably exist.

It would be interesting for anyone who could post an image of a newer Wheat cent with the wood grain pattern?

I've been trashing all my wheats like that (dumping them back into the re-sell pile). I wish I knew they were interesting to people. I would have weeded them out and sold them in lots. I've been doing well selling small lots of similar coins (toned, minor errors, etc.) You don't make a ton on them, but certainly a lot more than the "by the pound" lots. I may start saving these from now on until I have enough to sell as a lot .
