I had forgotten that I had this 1 ounce silver round made by the Continental Coin. I know it's sometimes mistaken for an actual US mint coin due to it having the words US Assay Office on it.

The silver actually was part of the former US Assay Office's strategic silver stockpile. It does have an interesting history. In addition to the 1 ounce rounds, they also made it in 10 oz. and 100 oz. bars.

Anyway, I can't find much info about whether this round has a premium or if it should just be treated as bullion. I guess it depends on who you ask, huh? Some places on the "web" says yea and some say nay.

Hi, at the store I work at (Portland OR, USA), we would buy and sell that round as bullion. Some dealers or round collectors may place a premium on it, but the only 'generic' rounds that we add a premium to are Engelhard Prospector rounds.

Thanks for the info. Makes sense. There probably are collectors that would appreciate the round's history. But, a lot of people would just treat it as bullion. That's what I figured. I kind of like it, so it's staying in my collection. I was just curious.

I did some more googling and found a website called examiner.com that listed my silver round as one of the top 5 privately minted silver coins.

Found another website (coinquest.com) that said it was worth the spot price for an ounce of silver.

A quick search of ebay reveals one with a buy it now price of $35, another at $39.95, four at $25.99 each, one at $27, and even one priced at $60. When I kept looking I found even more listed, mainly from $25 to $40 or so. I wonder if they ever sell any at those prices?
