As a series, these were produced by the US mint from 1986 until now. Though they have a face value of one dollar, they are intended as an investment in silver bullion and not as an actual spendable dollar, though they can be and sometimes are actually spent at face value, a substantial loss to whomever is spending it.

Is that rainbow coloring normal for this coin?

Eagles are 99.93% pure silver so they tend to develop toning quite easily.

Alex! The coloring on your coin is when the coin "toned". Silver will tone when exposed to the environment. Some toning is quite attractive and some coins I have seen have toned an ugly black. Some collectors love especially the "rainbow" toning but some prefer "blast white" coins.

Your dollar is a nice example of toning

In addition to its value as an American Silver Eagle, 1989 is a somewhat better date which should add a few dollars to the value of the coin. Toning like that can also add value to the right collector!

lex. Sorry to hear about your g-pa

I'll add to what others have said by estimating value just so you know. The toning on both has decent eye appeal with full coverage obverse but is a bit splotchy. I would say thet could pull $50-$100 each. Of coarse this is just for your records as I'm assuming you will not be selling them

Welcome to the wonderful world of coins... and bullion

My semi-local coin shop is currently selling a 1989 American Silver Eagle in uncirculated condition for about $22. The toning might give you a bit of a premium to the right buyer, but some collectors don't like toned coins. Right now silver prices are low. If or when it goes back up, your coin will increase in value just due to the fact it's 1 ounce of .999 pure silver. As time goes by, it'll also increase in numismatic value.

Batboy, a full obverse ASE toner like hers are worth much more than silver spot. If the eye appeal was better with less splotchyness and better color saturation they would be in the couple hundred range each. Toned ASE's are the bees knees lol
