Ok, please tell me how these can both possibly be G6. I think the first one probably is, but the second one is certainly a VG8, right?

I've used PCGS's photograde and David Lange's grading guide for Mercury dimes [https://www.davidlawrence.com/books...er-5/grading], and these two coins certainly appear to be different grades. What do you think?

Grading is subjective even at the same company
I see them as a very borderline either way but would prefer the eye appeal of the first one based on all pics shown of both coins

Rest in Peace

The obverse on the second dime has more detail then the first one. reverse's seem about the same. It's conservable that the second dime could have been graded VG-8 ,but no grade by TPG is written in stone.

What I see is the second one(completed listing) has more complete rims on both obverse and reverse plus a little more of the fasces are visible on the second one. Whether that's enough difference to change the grade is up for debate. Personally I don't think they are the same grade but I'm no expert either. For about the same price I like the second one better.

First one G-4, second G-6, the reverse rim is worn too much for VG.

Excellent feedback on this topic so far. Thank you all.

My thinking on VG-8 for the second merc (completed listing) is based on Lange's guidance (I fixed the link to that in my post) and Photograde (for G-6 vs VG-8):

Based mostly on Lange:
- Obverse: The rim is complete and entirely separated from the legend; some detail in liberty's wing.
- Reverse: A few lines are visible in the fasces (vertical sticks); the rim is entirely separated from the legend except immediately adjacent to "One" and "United".

Even Photograde shows no detail on the wing at G-6.

I agree that grading is subjective, but I wonder if you showed these to NGC now if they would agree the coins are of the same grade. I think not.

@dsfreeworld - I'm not seeing what you see as far as better eye appeal on the first coin (active listing). If you look at the obverses of both, I see more scratches overall on the obverse of the first coin, and also better detail in Liberty's hair (to left of wing) and in the wing itself. The reverse of the first coin seems to show total lack of any visible vertical fasces lines.

Agree with IGE that the left reverse rim is too worn for a VG grade on #2.

I think the first would be G-6 and the second would be VG-8.
