Hello, let me start out by saying I'm fairly new to the Coin World. I collect mainly 1oz modern silver coins ASEs and others from around the world. I recently got a couple of coins that have started to rainbow and one ASE proof that has a light gold toning completely covering background on both sides of coin. Does toning hurt the over all value of coin?

to CCF.Depends on eye appeal. If it looks nice it would add value and if it looks bad it would lessen the value. If you can, post pic Hope you enjoy our great site. John1

Typically, rainbow toning adds value.

Some collectors avoid toned coins and some love them. As was said, depends a lot of eye appeal. I've seen some toned coins sell for a premium.

Some silver coins tone to in my opinion an ugly brown. Not very eye appealing . but an original genuine NOT AT rainbow will command a much higher price. Oh yeah , to CCF .

Mott!! Some collectors prefer "blast white" coins and others see beauty in a rainbow toned coin and I have seen some really beautifully toned ASEs.

Toned coins generally carry a premium....except to the purists that like untoned coins but I think they are in the minority these days.

Thanks for all the replies and welcomes. Here is a pic as requested. Tried to get toning in pic. Lady Liberty and the Eagle on the obverse really stand out on this coin because of background toning. Pics don't do it justice.

Appears to be a proof with great contrast. Hard to tell the colors but a very nice proof example.

More importantly, how are you storing your coins? It seems that air is getting to them, that's how they tone. If you want to halt the progression, you should rinse them with acetone and transfer into AirTite holders. Then store your AirTites in a freezer grade ziplock with a desiccant pack and a sacrificial cent.

Yes this is a 1987s Proof. I do have Box and Coa. This is the only coin I have with this toning. I also have a 1881s Morgan that has started to tone a rainbow effect.
As for storing... My proofs are in their original mint boxes/capsules all my other coins are put into air tites as soon as I receive them.
