Just A Wild Guess. maybe someone practicing on how to alter a copper coin ?

It is a very common type of damage caused by counting/rolling machines.

Could it be, a crack in the die for the "2" allowed metal to seep up into the crack and rob the desired "2" of the metal it needed to show correctly?

With it parallel to the rim, it might be a vending machine. At that time they bought gumballs/nuts in those machines.

My initial thought was PMD, but closer inspection casts doubts. It could be die damage.

It is NOT die damage. It is PMD, just like this 1941 I came across a couple of years ago.

Very Interesting. both the coin and the nice pictures. I agree on the '52 it is PMD, but both that one and yours would have gotten a lot of extra scrutiny for their oddness.
