I picked up some error coins today and the majority of them are run-of-the-mill things, but this dime stuck out like a sore thumb. It almost looks like I could peel whatever it was struck through off. Any idea what the struck-through obstruction is? Here is the rest of what I picked up. Edited by davec13 01/16/2016 06:33 am

OOOO, I like it It looks like steel or iron based on what appears to be rust, check it with a magnet and get a weight.

Hmm... don't know what it's struck through, but nice pickups!

That almost looks like it could be peeled off the dime. Don't try it! But....could you slide a bit of paper under it? Or is it firmly attached?

I'm gonna try and hit the obstruction with the xrf and get a composition. As for how firmly attached it is I haven't tried anything with it yet. Maybe its remnants of a nail

A $47,000 nail? I think that's what the last one sold for.

One of the nicest error stuck through I've seen here for many a day. Cool.

An exceptionally nice example of struck-in debris. I agree that there's a good chance it's steel. Try a magnet, but one that's not too powerful and make sure there's a piece of thick card stock between the magnet and the coin. You don't want to damage the coin or tear the thing out.
You'll also want to weigh it to make sure it's not a piece of rolled-in debris. If it's struck in, the coin will be heavier than normal. If it's rolled-in, it will weigh the same as a normal dime or be slightly lighter, if the density of the foreign material is low.

Had a few free moments today and hit it with the xrf. It's showing up as copper, nickel, and iron. It also weighs in at 2.55grams. I guess it wasn't such a bad buy at 75cents.
