I've noticed a few mint state Vickies with yellowish stains within ICCS holders and was wondering if anyone knew what they were. I gently cleaned one of them, and although the yellowish stain is gone, the outline remains . The coin passed grading...MS63... Edited by canadian-varieties 01/16/2016 11:38 pm

although I prefer the original surface(minus the yellow stuff), you did a pretty good job restoring this coin. It does have a bit of a "cleaned" look though from the pictures you provided, especially on the obverse.

One of two things I believe , water staining from eons ago, from having been stored in an old leather purse. Excellent conservation on your piece!

I just bought another one today, its ICCS MS63...looks like I have another restoration job ahead of me. Would the water damage have happened BEFORE encapsulation with ICCS or after?

Most likely way before they ever got plasticized.

From where? That is not a white pronged holder from NGC or clear tri-pronged holder from PCGS...

I can't remember now if I used acetone or MS70...the coin still has full mint lustre, and even the yellow spots, once gone, revealed mint lustre underneath...yes CCCS I forgot ICCS had originally called it "RED" LOL... http://www.icollector.com/1881H-One-Cent_i12524267

For those types of spots acetone is fairly effective, most of the time .I had one done at NCS once did not know what they did but the coin now looks worse!
