Does anyone know anything about coinage from a small South Pacific island called Kitipas? I'm not even sure if I am spelling it right. A Google search has produced no information at all about this island. Thank you for your help.
Rest in Peace

There is a Kapas Island in Malaysia. Other than that, I don't find anything that's even remotely close to your spelling.

If it is kiribati, there is another thread in this same forum where someone is tallking about collecting those coins.

There's a "Christmas island" which is part of Kiribati; the locals spell it "Kiritimati" but still pronounce it as "Christmas". Wikipedia. But it doesn't make it's own coinage. Several private mints have issued Christmas-themed "coins" in the name of Kiribati. Coinworld article.

There's another "Christmas Island" in the Indian Ocean, owned by Australia. It doesn't have coins in its name either, though they do have their own postage stamps.

I've never heard of "Kitipas", in the Pacific or elsewhere. I suspect someone somewhere is mis-spelling it. Sorry.

I am keenly interested in the region, collecting circulating coinage, banknotes and even fantasies from South Pacific, but I have never seen/heard anything about the island mentioned. Not to say that I am an expert there....

Aside from the likely version of the Kiribati being misspelled, I can also suggest a remotely possible version of the Crescent Island (Ile Crescent) which "issued" a few acrylic coins (fantasies, of course)...

I am wondering where the reference is coming from. Any chance the OP can elaborate?

About two weeks ago I met a man and he said he was from an island called (this is what I heard) Kitipas (or kitibass). I had never heard anything about this island so I did some research, particularly about numismatics, and was only able to find one vague reference. I have been able to speak to this man again and he was able to clarify the mystery.

InconsistentBlend, you are correct. The spelling for this island is Kiribati but it is pronounced Kitipas, or Kitibass, or Kiribass, or several other similar pronunciations. I am now able to satisfy my curiosity about this matter.

Thank you everyone for your input.
