An 8 feathers morgan I purchased recently, the only marks are those 3 under the wing, it might have a shot at MS65 but not sure, breast feathers have no trace of wear

Hi smcc

Im far from an expert at morgans, but I'm in a learning mode for them !!

I would put this coin as a very strong 64 with a shot at 65,, I'm not sure if the luster is as dull as the pics show or if the staining on the obverse is as apparent as it looks in the pic, This would be the only thing I think could keep it from a 65.

smcc, based on comparison with my own slabbed Morgans, I think your 78CC 8TF has a good shot at MS-66 if you were to catch the PCGS graders on a good hair day. While there are also three contact marks on the obverse just below the farthest back part of Liberty's hair in addition to those on the reverse, they are not on her face (the most important device for grading Morgans), so they might or might not be enough to keep it from an MS-66; too close to call. I also agree with Rick's assessment about the luster, but I think it may be more a function of the image than of the actual coin.

A solid MS-65 if not an MS-66.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, I plan to send it off for slabbing if not next week then the week after, I am hoping for MS65 but 66 would be a nice bonus... if I compare it to this one

then I would say it would struggle to get a 66 but stranger things have happened!!

Good luck! To which grading service do you plan to send it?

PCGS.... I normally send all my coins there as I have platinum membership, although I did get a couple of bodybags back recently so I will see how the next batch go, if I am not happy then I will probably switch.... I was speaking to a respected dealer not too long ago and he told me some insider info on grading companies, he said that he uses different companies depending on the type and state of the coin, the only tidbit of info he was willing to divulge was that NGC are especially gentle on toned coins...not sure how true this is but I thought I would share it

Looks like a solid 64.

The chatter in the left obverse field and on the cheek will likely keep it out of a 65 holder.
