The 1797 half dollar is an extremely rare and valuable coin. Examples have sold anywhere from $18,000 to over a million dollars, depending on condition.

Unfortunately, you have a crude counterfeit, almost certainly not even made of silver. You might as well check it with a magnet; many pieces like this are made from steel in which case it will stick.

It also says on the edge "FIFTY CENTS OR ONE HALF DOLLAR".. What do you see wrong with it? Also it is definitely silver

Design is off. They didn't write fifty cents or one half dollar back in 1797. Take our word for it these are highly counterfeit

The main thing that's wrong with it is that it is not marked "Copy" or "Replica". All the devices. letters and numerals are not congruent with a genuine coin.

It hurts my eyes to see you holding it with your fingers, even knowing it's a fake.

Quote:
Just touching your coins with your bare fingers is enough to cause damage to them, especially if you collect higher grade coins. And you will definitely damage them if your fingers come in contact with mint-state and proof coins. Your fingers contain oils and miniscule pieces of grit that will adhere to the coins and cause them to discolor or suffer microscopic scratching. When you handle your coins, wear cotton gloves, and handle only the edges.
Rest in Peace

Members here are not saying it is fake without good reason.

Many of us see fake coins like this often.

There are many design problems with this coin, details
that are not on a real 1797 half dollar.

If your going to collecting coins like this you should
be getting some reference books. Also a magnet and scale.

As others posted, there is a good chance this coin will
stick to a magnet, and the weight will be off.

Even better chance it is not really silver.

It's sometimes hard for a novice collector to hear that their special coin isn't the real thing. Nevertheless, it needs to be said. Hopefully hirschney didn't waste a lot of money on this piece.

Here are images of a genuine MS-65 example sold at Heritage in 2014 for $1.29 million.

Welcome to the CCF, Hirschney. This is a great site for learning about coins. I've been at it for decades now ... I'm still learning!

To be assured that a coin is indeed silver, a "specific gravity" or other metal test is best done. Was this one tested? If not, it has but the appearance, the color of a silver coin. Even if there is some degree of silver content, one must study other aspects of a given coin. Some of these modern fakes do contain a modest amount of silver that will give them a pronounced "ring" when struck by another coin. Crude fakes such as this one are easily spotted by CCF members who have seen so many of these.

Let's do it this way. Spot the differences.

It isn't mine. A friend had this he had gotten from someone years ago. It used to be in a plastic case. Perhaps it was one of those reproduction ones you see on TV. He isn't good at these kind of things so I told him I would look into it. I'm not too into coins that I would be able to do those comparisons aside from the obvious coloration difference. He has held onto it for a long time and I'm sure will be disappointed.
