As long as the weights are right, I think they are both MS.

The $5 is s solid 63.
The $2.5 is at least 63 with a shot a 64. Seriously nice.

no way to judge and comment on the surface luster while they are in the mylar. If you could remove and post good head on pics without too much glare it will make it easier.

They both have a good shot at MS63. Pics outside holders are needed.

$5 MS-64
$2.50 MS-64+ (that spot on the obverse holds it back from an MS-65

Could you post better pictures of the 1878 S? I think it might be a high-quality counterfeit.

Okay. What I was seeing were "spikes" on the obverse rims. I can't tell for sure that they are there. Take a loop and look closely around the rim and see if there are any spikes (specifically 6:00 and 9:00-12:00). For what they look like, see this link:

I could be wrong, and if genuine, the quarter eagle will be UNC details because the obverse has been cleaned.

The two rightmost red circles are spikes. The left one is a random raised dot. The pink circle all the way to the left is a depression. This gold dollar is counterfeit.

Thanks TypeCoin...Got a hi power loupe and looked. don't see any spikes or bumps. I agree with UNC details also. Paid melt price for this coin last april,so I'm probably not hurt. However, is there a "bible" on counterfeit coins that you would use? Lots of gold coins are sold around here at estate sales, auctions ect. I am getting more cautious a time goes on..we all should be!

I guess I was just seeing things. You have to be overly cautious nowadays. If you paid melt, then you would not have lost anything since these counterfeits are almost always made of gold.

Buy Bill Fivaz's Counterfeit Gold DDetection Guide. It'll show you what to look for in counterfeits, but it won't be too useful in identifying specific counterfeits (because there are just SO many of them, he couldn't put them all in one book).

Besides the cleaning hairlines on the quarter eagle, I'm seeing a little friction in the reverse fields, as well as additional hairline scratches. I'm not sure that piece would qualify as mint state, even if it didn't have a cleaning issue.

The half eagle to my eye likewise has some luster disruptions in the fields on both sides. I don't think this one is a lock for MS either. I'd give it an AU-58, with no cleaning or other visible problems.
