It looks almost right for Die Pair #2, but I don't think the MM tilts enough to the right, so I'm thinking it's counterfeit.

When the counterfeiter was welding the "S" on, he accidentally let the torch slip and pretty much destroyed Lincoln from the chest area to his face.

Westernsky's explanation seems plausible. What about the garbage in the upper left field?

According to the ebay listing:

Quote:
This coin encountered and electrical shock! Someone had placed it in an electric breaker box in place of a fuse and actually received an electrical burn which is obvious on the Obverse.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

Nevol - I don't doubt that. People used to use cents back in the day for fuses and what not.

I think it's 100% legit, and the mintmark hasn't been added IMHO

The house I grew up in had screw in type fuses. I can honestly say I have jammed an old copper cent into the fuse box in a pinch.
Rest in Peace

Issue - This does NOT match any of the four known die pairs for this date. Check the references!

C'mon you guys.

Comments please!

Looks more like acid damage to me, most likely a failed experiment to remove something from the surface. The MM is almost correct but it seems to missing the die chip in the upper loop of the S.

The bottom line - Who cares, it's a badly damaged and unslabbed key day, you'd have to be stupid to buy it.
