I'm planning to purchase an 1833 Bust Quarter (B1) from a dealer I trust and whose grading standards pretty well match mine. The coin is raw.

With my trusty ANA Grading Guide and Photograde, I'm seeing a solid VF-30, with one exception. The upper portion of the shield on the reverse is pretty weak for what I'd expect for the grade (and much weaker that the other reverse features).

I've checked some auction sites and it appears that this may be normal for the 1833 quarters. I'd like some other opinions. Any Bust Quarter specialists out there?

Hi Bilbo,
I don't know about weak strikes as a rule, but as a point of comparison here are photos of an 1833 quarter I briefly owned after winning a Stacks auction. The auction photos looked great but the listing didn't mention the coin was overgraded in an Accugrade MS-63 holder. Stacks refunded my money after we agreed the coin was actually MS-60 with impaired luster due to an old cleaning.

My photos aren't real sharp but as I recall there were no significant areas of strike weakness. However, I believe this was the B2 reverse (with no period after 25C). It's possible the B1 coins had different typical strike characteristics.

By the way I definitely prefer the 1833 as the best date of the Capped Bust, small-diameter (close collar) quarters. It's the scarcest and has the best potential for value increase, IMO.

I wouldn't claim to be a bust quarter expert although I do own two. Weak strikes are not uncommon in all of the early to mid 1800's coins. My personal opinion is that if the coin looks to be VF-30 to you, you knock it down maybe one notch to VF-20 and look to price accordingly. Remember, there's always another VF-30 coin out there. Much of this is subjective - sometimes a weak strike is offset by some other positive attribute of the coin - it's part art, part science.

Love the bust coins of all denominations!

Best regards,
Ken

I think I've found my answer. These are reverses of 1833 quarters graded VF-35 and VF-30 by ANACS with a similar looking upper shield.

we have taken a large # like that a the coins shop I fill in on Saturday. we have sent a few off like that and 1/2 come back from NGC+PGCS at the same grade so you have 50/50 on the grade.

but Stacks I would send it back but they will keep 10% so crack it out and send it off u may get the same grade back
