I took CCF's advice and had this coin spend some time with acetone (before and after pics). In my opinion, looks a lot better...thank you! Thoughts on it still being an environmental damage piece?

Did you let it soak?

Looks like UNC details to me.
Rest in Peace

The acetone bath removed the brown gunk but all the black crud still remains. My opinion is enviro damage details still. On a side (bright)note it appears to be a VAM-11A. http://www.vamworld.com/1928-S+VAM-11A

Soaked it for a while and it helped a bit. So then I added a little gentle q-tipping (because it wasn't going to hurt it any more that the ugliness it was before) and voila!

Dave, I do see where it is a VAM-11A...thank you for pointing that out as I am definitely learning but VAM's haven't been part of the education yet! Is that a rarer VAM? What kind of value does it add to the piece?

Nice details on that coin, it is a shame about the stains.

When I get a coin like that, I can't stop until I have
the stain off .. most times it will end up looking cleaned.
Then hope it tone back to acceptable .. for a cleaned coin.
Rest in Peace

VAMworld has it listed as an R4 which implies fairly common although only two examples show up on the condition census. This would be a no added value to your example, just a cool factor.

I don't know how long your soak was but if you got those great results, I'd consider soaking it again, for perhaps as long as a week. It won't hurt it to try and may improve it. I've read that some folks alternately freeze coins (in distilled water), and then heat them. The expansion and contraction apparently works well for removing "crud." Your calling this a stain, are you certain it's not "crud?" Jack

Try a dip in E-Z-Est Jewel Luster, it should remove the black. At this point you can't hurt it, only improve it.
