Hello all. Started collecting coins as a kid over 50 years ago and just recently got the "bug" back. Anyway, started going through some of my accumulation and ran across this 1916 Mercury. Need help with the mintmark. It looks like an "S" to me, but every "S" I've been able to locate is a different style than this one appears to be. Take a look at the pictures and let me know what you think. Wish it was a genuine "D", but doesn't look like it. Thanks.

To CCF , You have a small black spot on bottom of MM. try to get it off with a little acetone soaked Q-tip . It may or may not come off. but if it does , just might make it easier to tell if S or D .
let us know how you made out.

If the acetone doesn't help the tip of a wooden toothpick might remove the black without touching the coins surface. Let us know how you process in reviving your coin passion.

Welcome to the CCF grumpy56.

That's really wild, really hard to tell. Was just comparing to these pics here:

I wonder what a TPG would say about this one, AG or Fr? Guess we'd need to see the obverse too.

This resource may help you too, there are images of the various mm varieties:

Appreciate all the info. I still can't really tell what it is, but those mint mark variety pictures are telling. The one thing "my mintmark" doesn't appear to have are the serifs which seem to be on all the varieties. Tried to clean it out, but doesn't seem to add much clarity.

I think that area took a hit, and over the year it worn to the surface evenly.

Looks like the coin took a hit, The metal pushed up by the hit forms the thin curve at the top of the hit and the broad curve at the side that makes up the body of the "S".
