This week on ebay a very interesting 8 reales was posted.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/222007344250

Here is the picture so it does not disappear when the time limit is up.

This coin also appeared on several forums on Facebook and it has generated substantial buzz among collectors.

The two open questions as I see them are:

What is it?

When was it made?

Hi there, this is not a coin, this is just a crudely engraved piece of metal.

As sure as the sky is blue I knew this would catch your attention...

Stylistically, it doesn't look particularly modern... The engraving is so complete and thorough that I personally can't discern whether the host may have been an actual 8R worn slick, or, perhaps more likely, planed off love token style on both sides.

Bob, have you seen one like this before?

If you enlarge the original photos on the ebay posting you can clearly see that there is something UNDER the hand engraved outline. Look at the two s superscripts in the assayer statement. The s's are present but NOT RECUT. The existence of an under type is also seen on many of the letters.

I am curious only because the host coin might actually be an example of the Riddell # 415 which is known to have been made in several closely related die pairs. The odd eagle (which should be the French design) is very close to the same outline seen on all Riddell 415 and variations.

As to whether or not I have seen one like this - NO. Why it was done makes little sense which is why I like it.
