Is there any way to know when the 2016 ASE proofs will be released or does it vary widely each year?

All we can do is watch and wait. The bigger question is how many 'kinds' of proofs they may issue.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if there was a bullion release +daystoproof type of schedule or not.

I'm sure you already checked, which is why you're asking, but the product schedule page still says "TBD". Normally proof ASEs are one of the earliest products on the Mint calendar, but I think they may be behind schedule this year due to the change in design (smooth rims with incuse lettering/numbering).

2015 - released by 1/2/2015 (my purchase date)
2014 - released by 1/17/2014 (my purchase date)
2013 - released by 1/30/2013 (my purchase date)

They haven't announced any special sets, but the year is early!
