Anyone have any idea why a 1971 Kennedy half would have been gold plated?

People do weird stuff to coins.

The Home Shopping Network sold gold plated quarters -- they probably still do. So maybe someone was trying to copy them.

It looks like the reverse was carefully plated but something went wrong on the obverse.

I kinda like the look of that one - both faces. I have a few fully-plated gold Kennedy halves but nothing like this.

Because someone saw a chance at selling a coin that's worth $ .50 for $10.
