So I'm researching Liberty nickels because my in-laws found a small coin purse with around 10 or 15 Liberty nickels. There's also on silver silver dime and some bus tokens.

From what I can find, it seems almost all dates of any Liberty nickels are plentiful besides 1912S. It seems after that the grading is what matter.

The Liberty nickels they found are unfortunately in bad shape. So seemingly none with be worth anything, but I wanted to check here to see if I missed anything. Did I get the right impression with my research? Anything else to look for? I'm otherwise completely uninformed in the nickel department.

Thanks for any tips!

Semi keys are 1883 w/cents, 1884, 1887, 1888, 1894, 1896
Keys are 1885, 1886, 1912-S :)
Slight premium for pre-1900 dates without issues.

Ok! here is a video of the search through. I had one good find from the semi key dates and another bad condition find from the key date. I'm attempting to get photos of the good one. Soon to come!

The 1883 without cents (yours) is very common and almost always in higher grades; the one with CENTS on the back is quite a bit scarcer. The no-cents were plated in gold and passed as $5 gold coins to unsuspecting people.

Looking at mintage, I'm confused. Cents has 16 mil, no cents has 5. Isn't no cent more scarce? Looking online I can see its not valuable, but I don't know why.

Your No Cents is in pretty good shape, and worth a few bucks :)

Reason is that the version without cents on the back were hoarded when new by the public, and saved in great numbers in Uncirculated or Almost Uncirculated grades. The version with CENTS added came out late in the year, and was not hoarded; it was in circulation for fewer months than the 1883 No Cents. So while the No Cents nickels were not minted as much, they were mostly saved and not spent, making a large supply of them in better grades vs. the ignored 1883 w/cents nickels

1888,1894
1912-S, 1886, 1885
In that order of importance.

First being less important.
1883 no Cents is extremely common even in Mint State which number in the thousands.

If your 1894 looked like your 1883 n/c ,you would have had a $100 coin.

Yeah, too bad about that! Due to it being roughed up they are both about equal and only worth a few bucks.
