291674171264 This seller has several US gold pieces. I don't know if they are counterfeit or not, but this one weighs 16.8g when it should weigh 17.5, and it's in fairly nice shape and even a slick piece would weigh at least 17.0g

They all look fine to me. US gold is something I will NEVER buy overseas for anything over melt without in-hand inspection.

The surface colors look questionable to me compared to known genuine examples.

While they look good, and the seller is known with decent feedback, I too would be skeptical to purchase them. These are often faked, very well. You really need the coin in hand or in an experts hand to tell. I'd pass if it was my money.

I think I'd pass on this one.

When I tested 10 AU US double eagles, there was almost no variation between coins. The Double Eagle is supposed to weigh 516 grains, and all the ones I tested were slightly above 516 grains, according to my scale. Based on an average of 3 weighings, the coins weighed: 516.50, 516.23, 516.43, 516.24, 516.19, 516.09, 516.37, 516.36, 516.15, and 516.23 grains. The scale was repeatable to about .04 grain, but the absolute accuracy is unknown. IIRC, the scale was calibrated with a 50 gram weight.

Of course, we don't know how accurate the ebay seller's scale is.

16.72g is the correct weight for an eagle, so 16.8 is in tolerance. The price seems high for a raw coin. I wouldn't buy it. It's too much of a reach. For someone with deeper pockets that could gamble on a possible fake the premium over melt is $100.

Why spend that much money on an item that hasn't been authenticated, i.e., slabbed by a reputable TPG.
