The US Mint has posted information on its web site about its design competition for the 2018 silver dollar which will be struck to "honor the over four million men and women of the United States who served in World War I."

Unlike the Baseball Hall of Fame design competition, this one is seeking entries specifically from artists vs. the general public.

Here's a link to all the details: http://www.usmint.gov/competition/wwi/

I look forward to seeing the finalists. Hopefully they will have many entries which are representative of that specific conflict, although I am having a difficult time coming up with a good idea myself.

Please, oh please don't go with a "modern" design.

I'm hoping something more reflective of the time period as far as design goes.

100 years later the design should represent the 18 million people that died in the war.

18M?! I had to double check that number... It's horrific.

Trench warfare horrors, disease and pestilence... what an absolute nightmare. This coin could be difficult to design...not sure where I'd start. But it has to honor those that lost their lives fighting for their respective countries (no matter which side they were on).

Let's see what the artists come up with.

A couple of ideas for this one. I understand there is a National WWI Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, MO. I've never been - anyone?

It may be interesting to "translate" one of the elements at the Memorial into a coin:
https://www.theworldwar.org/explore...and-memorial

Interestingly, Robert Aitken -- who designed the 1915 Pan-Pac $50 gold coins -- sculpted the Guardian Spirits at the top of the Liberty Memorial Tower there.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rober...rsoll_Aitken (click on lower right image for close up of this sculpture)

Also, has anyone seen this new RCM coin: http://www.mint.ca/store/coins/fine...-prod2610012
Aside from the concave feature, has the US Mint ever developed a (modern) coin with such intricate detail? I think it would be incredible for the US Mint to be so ambitious and think outside the box for something like this (i.e., WWI commemorative)...understanding that this is a design competition.
