Al-Adil I 1145-1218, was the younger brother of the Famous general Saladin who fought against the Christian in the Crusades. Al-Adil was a general in Saladin's army and also fought in the Crusades. I liked this coin for two reason it's relationship to Saladin and that it was struck during the Crusades.

AR Dirham

Al-Adil I

His full name was: al-Malik al-Adil sayfad-Din Abu-Bakr Ahmed ibn Majim ad-Din Ayyub.

Damascus mint

al-Adil was the governor of Aleppo 1183-1186. Administered Egypt during the 3rd Crusades 1186-1192, Governor of the Northern provinces 1192-1193, and governor of Damascus after Saladin's death.

It is really impressive for its association with the crusades. It's in remarkable condition for its age. It blows my mind that a coin like this can still be found. How do pieces like this survive? Where has it been? I'd love to hear an actual account of where and when it has been these past 800+ years.

Unfortunately unless they are found in recorded hoards it's difficult to say where and how they were found.

very nice coin , I never saw such a design on islamic coins , I think it is Mith 821f ; do you have a translation of the inscription ? I am always curious to understand the coins , some times it takes a lot of time , like with my islamic coin , but finally I have found .
It is strange also that the Arabic name is not translated in the same order : The king , The Just , Sword of the Faith, father of Bakr, son of Najim ad-Din Ayyub . Al-Adil I = The Just I .

I've been trying to find a translation but haven't been able too. I believe it's Mitchiner 821 var, Balog 281.

i certainly like it, I didn't know who this guy was...cool association with saladin.

they sure make some pretty coins for just having patterns and text, no pictures. I have this contemporary islamic coin from the muwahids, not a pretty on the patterns but cool square shape.
