it is more than likely just from wear and use, but I wanted to double check, thought it looked odd. the "in" is connected, and some of the other letters seem to be filled in like the mint mark and the "R". figured I would ask, thank you for the help, I hope I find something that is worth showing off one of these times. haha, no luck so far.

the R looks like it took a hit plus wear, and the IN maybe hit plus wear, plus maybe a die chip
Rest in Peace

Possibly die fill between the I and N. Actually stands out rather dramatically. Nice find.

It is extreme die erosion, a common issue for 1982 and 1983 coins, but it is more severe on your coin than typically seen. Finding gem quality early die state examples for those two dates can be quite a challenge.

what do you think something like this would be valued at? just curious for the collection. I like to write down what it worth now so my kids can compare them to what the were worth now to then.

For most coins, there is no 'official' value. It all depends on a number of factors and varies day-to-day. However, I think I can safely say that this coin is worth about 25-30 cents, probably closer to the former.
Nice find, though.

haha. ok. I thought maybe it would have been a little more. it is a good one to put up for the kids collection, so that is cool.

oh, and can you tell me what is going on with the numbers in the date? they look extremely wide, and the 3 is split in half.

That's just wear. The 'split in half' three is just damage- it took a hit right in the middle.

I'm sorry the coin isn't worth much, but it's still a fun find, and it sounds like a good idea to set it aside.
