Hello fellow Ikenstiens,

I bought a small lot of 5 1971 Blue Ikes (In an original mint shipping box) knowing ahead of time that there was 'some toning'. When I got them out, I had a bad feeling because everything was very dry. The outside box was brittle, the adhesive on the blue envelopes had all failed, but the worst thing is that the cellos holding the coin and medal had separated and the coins had a bad coat of that brown paint-like gunk and even a couple fingerprints.

I've had one in the acetone for most of the morning. Any other suggestions?

Then I'm doomed; doomed I say! Oh, the humanity. Oh, well. They've gotta be good for something somehow.

Hoping for more ideas, because this has to happen more frequently. How did the heat sealed plastic protection packaging just come apart like that?

Brown ikes are proofs and came in a brown box, blue ikes are uncirculated ikes and came in a blue package

They are both 40% silver but a blue Ike is coined similar to a business strike. A brown Ike is a proof.

The colors simply refer to the packaging they came in from the mint. Kind of goofy but that's the story.
Rest in Peace

That's a shame. If they are really crummy -- send them to nohope to be polished and made into jewelry.

I have had some success with MS 70 ... for IKE's that
have not faired well in the OGP.

If they are so far gone .. might not hurt to try

If the acetone doesn't help, you have nothing to lose trying ez-est. Just make sure you rinse really well and then an acetone rinse to dry them.

Okay, if an overnight in acetone yields nothing, I'll go to the extremes. Maybe. Seriously, thanks everybody for suggestions. Something has to give!

A second vote for MS70, for this particular problem. I ignore the product directions, which suggest rolling it on with a Q-tip. Just a dip of a few seconds followed by a thorough rinse. I doubt it will help with the fingerprints, though.

If the cello is broken, and the blue IKE is that bad, then the 5 second dip in e-z-est may be your last resort..try one and see! hopefully it will work out..the coin was probably left in a dry,hot environment for too long? wash it off good, and pat dry!..let us know
