I wanted to post an example of a 53 SF 1c. This is the scarcer of the two varieties for '53, but nothing like the rarity of the '55 NSF. I wish I had found an MS coin, but in this grade it might be worth $1.

The best way to determine the SF vs NSF varieties is the shape and alignment of the "I" in DEI. In the case here, the SF variety has more subtle serifs, and the letter points just slightly left of the denticle's center.

Kurt, mine IS the NSF. If you have a '54, it will be SF. It makes a good basis for comparison. It is only, not either, neither, or nor! LOL

SF = shoulder fold, or a clothing strap the appears on QE's bust. When the bust was first designed, the relief was too high and the clothing strap didn't impress into the planchet, making the bust appear bare-shouldered. So the obverse was reworked with different lettering, a lower relief portrait and more hair detail. This is the "shoulder fold" variety, because the strap is visible in MS states at least. However, it wears off so quickly that one must use other diagnostics to attribute the coin! One has to wonder whether all that effort was actually worth it. At least it makes for some interesting variety hunting, particularly for 1955 where the NSF version is valued at $500 in AU.

Wish I had a hoard of canadian cents to go through but I don't know where to get them. They probably already been searched on what ebay has to offer.

Right--nobody I've talked to who bought one of these "unsearched" penny lots on ebay has found much. I think you have a much better bet if you can befriend a dealer who's bought a hoard off somebody and you get first dibs on it.

Of course, if you live close to the Canadian border, you can go to the bank and try to get a box. I understand it moght be problematical, because they like to sel" 'boxes" to businesses, not individuals. Your next best bet would be to get some one to swap with you, roll-for-roll, and each one "eat" the S&H on each end. You get your coins at face.

Does the SF or NSF pertain to Canadian Pennies dated 1961 and 1962 or just to 1953?

Jim, there were NSF/SF varieties for 53, 54, and 55. The '55 NSF is the real rarity. As far as I know, everything after '55 was SF.

I justg found my first pointed 5 for the 85 variety, and I'm on my way to the closest (500 km's) shop to hunt for the 47 ML BL 7 and also for " 48 between" and the "49 points"
hopfully I find something worth taking home at a decent price

Snaz, is it possible to find the '49ATs in bulk collections up there, or have they been all picked out? Congrats on finding the pointed 5, and good luck!

well, I just got bac. I pulled a 47 ML blunt 7 from his junk bin.. I dont think he new it was there... :) and I
grabbed a 1953 shoulder fold for 15 bucks.. Id say F 12.. He's pretty stiff with prices, I know, but it was one of the
few I needed.. so I was willing to pay.. I tried to get him lower..
I also picked up a 1927 Merc dime and 2 morgans ( my first 2) a 21 in.. XF - AU and a 1900 in F- VF.. I over payed for most of it I'd say.. but I mean.. Its the only shop around so.. beggers cant be choosers I guess..
and no.. theres not much of a chance pulling one of those out of bulk kurt, well not that I've seen..
And I just recently finished 300 dollars in cents from the bank.. and no 49 AT's
but I tell you what, I sure was surprised when I found like... 600 AU cents from the late 60's 70's and early 80's..LOL
ebay here I come :)
