Most of you know when it comes to Lincoln Cents, I am your guy. I am trying a little diversity. I find myself being drawn to seach nickel rolls. Thing is, I am unsure what to keep an eye out for. On any cent I turn over and see the date and I immediatelt know the pickup points to watch for. On nickels not so much. I bought anothe half brick today. This will make about 4 nickel bricks in the past couple of weeks. I have found about 5 silver War Nickels, and a couple of Buffalo nickels. Outside of that I have found only 1 RPM and 1 doubled die. Am I missing something here? What draws you to search nickels? Looking at Variety Vista, are there really only 2 known RPMs for the 1980's and only a small handful of non-proof 1970's? Please share with me what it is that you look for when searching nickels. A few years ago there were quite a few nickel roll hunters on CCF. Now I do not see hardly any. Where is all the love for Jefferson?

If I am remembering correctly Ocala and Rackster are the nickel people. Ocala (if I have the member name correct) finds some really cool ones. Especially love the the Die Trail ones that are posted. I have started getting a few rolls of nickels myself to see it I can get one of those. I also believe Ocala found a really good triple DDR on one couple months back. Otherwise the only other thing I have been reading about for the nickels are with the Full Steps and I think those were hard to find for the 1940's or 50's?

I am interested in more information on the nickels as well, so this should be a really good post to follow.

I don't search bank nickel boxes anymore it never worked out for me only search bu rolls, proof sets or mint cellos

I go on ebay, coin club, show or lcs to cherry pick.

I used to get 0-12 silver nickels per box, 1 or 2 rpms, laminations, you should find the modern DDR and DDO oiv maybe some trails

I also buy full albums and search them take out varieties and add back a replacement coin and flip it and get another.

I've searched a lot of USA nickels ... currently at 399,200 nickels searched ... so you will find some love for the Jefferson nickel from me.

That said ... I have never been interested or inspired by the search for the microspore needed hunt for varieties ... simply do not have the interest to search for minute dashes/dots that are so fascination to the variety fans.

Fully respect their interest in that branch of the hobby ... it's just not for me.

Somewhat regret that the current state of knowledge of Jefferson nickel variety is likely very incomplete ... nowhere near advanced as the Lincoln Cent in regards to understanding and cataloging in some systematic way the various coins ... fully admit that I have done nothing to contribute to that effort.

If you are approaching the Jefferson series as you have the Lincoln Cent series ... then IMHO you have a tremendous opportunity to break new ground and inform the collecting community on new varieties.

For me ... I am fully satisfied with my complete circulation found set ... and will continue to hunt for circulation find upgrades.

Looking forward to the first new variety that you find and post!

David

Thanks guys. This gives me some things to think about. My education of the Lincoln Cent is decades in the making. Maybe I will dabble a bit more and see if I can get that same spark with nickels.

The suggestions other have posted are very good and will keep you busy searching. I just have a few ideas of my own to add.

Full step nickels are the hope of us all, but don't bother much with 1970 and later, these are fairly common. Concentrate on 1969 and earlier.

The 1950-D is the Key day everyone knows about. Most people overlook the 1939-D key date. This is much harder to come by and much more costly. If you manage to find one the note the day, it will be important to future generations to know.

Then there are the "Black Beauties". You will know one when you see it, they are dark and beautiful. Do an online search for black beauty Jefferson nickels. Take a good look at any pictures you find, drool a bit and get to searching.

Have fun

I also thought there was another supposed good find of a 1940 with the 1939 back? Did I miss that in here - or is this not a good find?

What great info - thanks

CoinCents, yes you are right, I forgot about that variety. You are referring to the 1940 reverse of 1938. It is a very rare variety and something to be sought after. All of the 1939 nickels from all of the mints have two varieties; variety 1 is reverse of 38 and variety 2 is reverse of 40. The steps are the telling feature. There is a blogger that makes a compelling argument that the 1939 reverse of 1940 is the true key to the series. I don't remember the link but a simple google search will get you to his site.
