Hello everyone..
I have a question about collecting NGC slab business strike Jefferson nickels..at the moment I only want to NGC, maybe later I will do PCG.

Now, I like to collect, I don't want the best of the best top grade, I just like to complete a nice looking set..Also because I don't have deep pockets at all. Most important.

I'm almost done completing my NGC 1965-2015 Proofs all are PF69. Cheaper then PF70's except 1976 and earlier need most of those..and most are pretty pricey.
But in the mean time..

I want to start a nice collection of NGC MS State coins 1938-2016.
I know I'm not going to worry about FS but just wondering what grades I should be tring to get. Example MS 66 or MS 65 and from what years. Any ideas would be great, and I'm in no hurry to finish the set...

Thanks everyone.

I assume you know about the NGC Registry and Chat Boards, but if not, that is the place to view other collectors' NGC sets and another great forum to post questions about collecting coins in NGC slabs.
Rest in Peace

For your NGC mint state Jefferson's I would just go for MS-64-65 . Anything more than that will be too costly. don't look for FS either.
Good luck on your collection.

What makes YOU happy?

Couple choices...

Based on POPs, coin by coin, go for the most common or a notch below the best available (that keeps you out of the fight for the top POP)

Or, again based on the POPs, what grade is available and again not top pop across all years

Mix the two, decade by decade (30s and 40s in MS62, 50s and 60s in MS64, etc.

Finding slabbed Jefferson nickels from the 1950's into the early 1960's in MS-66 or MS-67 is almost impossible and if you do find one it will give you a severe case of sticker shock. The business strikes from this era are generally weak and most coins were well circulated. You will be better off setting your sights on buying grades around the MS-63 range.

Everyone will tell you about the 1950-D being the key date, which is true to a point. These coins were hoarded from the mint so finding a high grade is no problem and will be very affordable. The one coin that will catch you by surprise is the 1939-D, this will set you back around $100 in a MS-63 and it goes way up from there. Good luck with this collection, have fun with it and I want to see some pictures!
