Question - It looks like they have $10 Crossover special at PCGS during Long Beach Show. Why does PCGS charge 1% guarantee premium charge if the coin does cross over? Hopefully answer is not because they can.

If your coin crosses, they will charge the standard crossover rate plus 1% of the value of the coin. If the coin does not cross, you pay $10. The 1% is simply a way for PCGS to make money, but your coin will most likely go up in value.

Very reasonable rate in my opinion. Most cross overs will fetch a lot more than a additional percent.

Not sure how much my Peace dollars will go up by with PCGS holder vs existing NGC holders... I'm just trying to consolidate them into one registry.

Yes, that's a bit different. In that case you have a point.

You may want to consider using the NGC registry as NGC takes both PCGS and NGC for USA coins.

I am a bit "Iffy" with the percentage charges. It should be a flat rate because a percentage rate means that PCGS has a vested interest in giving a coin a higher grade.

Well, that's what I was actually hoping for when I submitted a hefty premium fee with my last crossover attempt to PCGS, but they didn't go for it. They probably already have lots of money, so my theory didn't hold up.

Maybe they didn't take the bait this time Ed . Impartiality is why we trust the grades assigned by a TPG and this percentage rate charge has the potential to erode that.

Getting coins to cross at PCGS is not easy as they only cross about 40%.

I was at Long Beach and decided to attempt a cross for one coin. It is an 1814 Classic large cent currently in a blue ANACS holder at MS-60. I already attempted a cross at NGC and they refused to cross it at MS-60. They noted "too much wear" on the submission form. This time I specified a minimum AU-58 grade.
The actual cost is a bit higher than was mentioned. There is a $10 service fee plus a return shipping charge of $20 or more depending on value of the coin. Then, if the coin does cross they charge you $125 plus 1% of the value of the coin, based on the PCGS price guide. In my case it would be worth it. I'll report on how it turns out.
