Hey all, in case you haven't heard yet, PCGS has an app that compiles all the information that used to be available only by subscription. It is called PCGS coinfacts in the iTunes Store and is free. It is very well thought out and functions very well from my experience. One of the pieces of statistical data I find interesting is the estimated survival in all grades number. I realize much of this information is in its infancy, and will continue to be refined as data is updated. I guess the main takeaway I have from reviewing this data is how low these numbers are for a great number of coins. Indian cents, Half Dimes, Seated dimes and many others have most dates with survival rates in the few thousands. I have been naive with this aspect of the hobby my entire life. I would be interested to see what others have to say after reviewing some of this data.

I don't know if the data is biased or not. Is it only graded coins that they have done or some sort of guess based on the number of entries. Either way will get you really flawed fuzzy numbers. Coins get graded multiple times and most don't get graded.
I think the closest you could get to a real number is by having some sort of survival equation will you take the minted number and apply a expected loss destroy rate throughout the years.

I downloaded the app because it looked cool I take a look and see if I can figure out how they estimate.

You have to change the search to iPhone only. You can still download and use it on a iPad just fine just not designed for it. Resolution looks super good just some of the buttons and font sizes are a little bigger then it needs to be. So might be good for some of the old timers eyes I guess atleast. Not sure why they just didn't say it was both.

Try typing PCGS in the search box. Do a search the scroll down a little. I'm not sure why it isn't showing up like it did for me when I downloaded it but it is a little hard to find. On the iPad, there should be an iPad/iPhone only tab at the top left of the screen . Try clicking that and searching both ways. I got it to show up that way tonight.

Estimated survival rates have very little in common with the number of coins graded. Survival estimates compiled over the years in many of D. Bowers books reflected numbers from his experiences over the years, not hard data with the exception of some major melts of silver pieces. You will note a great number of the survival estimates are roughly 10% of the original mintages.

Early American dollar survival rates are around 3%. Its shocking how few US patterns survive. You can get a coin which has only 5-6 of them around for about $5K. Fortunately, there aren't too many collectors of it. Same is true of early colonials.

Never mind. I found it using a google search. Interesting how the survival report for the 1893 S is higher than the 1894 (meaning it is more common) but it still costs at least three times as much. Key dates make no logical sense.

Glad you found it TypeCoin. Take a look at the 1877 Indian cent compared to the 1878. Another mind bender.
